Sanctimony

Project Type

Digital Photography

Date

2021

As a species, we idolise nature for its beauty whilst directly contributing to its destruction every day. Yet whenever we see it presented in the media and even within art, it is almost always through the idyllic lens.

Year on year we see a rise in natural disasters as a direct effect of our actions. Large corporations reap massive profits whilst emitting huge amounts of greenhouse gasses. Yet BP in all their corporate cunning were able to shift the responsibility onto the population as individuals through the idea of Carbon Footprints - effectively holding nature to ransom whilst withholding the power of effective change.

“Sanctimony” acts as an attack on this arrogance and hypocrisy, focusing on stark brutality over pristine beauty, taking inspiration from Bosch’s Garden of Earthy Delights. Using stark perspective as a way of demonstrating natures susceptibility to manipulation - something that in the light of day would ordinarily be beautiful becomes deeply unsettling in the cover of night.
